10 random things about me… because some jerk (or jerkette browbeat me into it):

1. I’m a hugger, but I rarely initiate a hug.
2. People either like me or hate me, but the ones that hate me usually do so because of my reaction to something they said or did.
3. If someone doesn’t like me, I won’t lose a minute of sleep over it, life’s too short.
4. Most of the jokes I know are ones I probably can’t actually tell anyone…
5. I’d rather help build up someones ego than help prop up an ego that’s already overgrown.
6. It’s easier for me to find something I like about someone than something I dislike.
7. Will Rogers never met a man (person) he didn’t like, I’ve found them, but never really found someone worth the trouble of actually hating, not worth my time.
8. If I’m looking at you, odds are I’m thinking of the bests ways to take your picture. If I’m looking at you and smiling, I’ve figured it out.
9. Most people that think they’ve seen me mad have only seen me irritated, irritated is bad enough, you wouldn’t like to see me angry. (apologies to Bruce Banner for the misquote)
10. I have a ridiculous amount of patience for things that interest me, and not very much at all for things that don’t, which is why I can spend long hours working on the little details in pictures of people, and can spend up to an entire minute looking at a picture of a building.

Tim’s Plan (or vague ideas) for Addressing Student Debt

Tim’s Plan (or vague ideas) for Addressing Student Debt

– Any college that accepts government backed student loans can only charge a set tuition rate, rather like how doctors get billed by HMOs, the doctor may send a bill for $100, but since they belong to the network, they’re only going to receive $50. Colleges that don’t like being paid a lesser amount can refuse to accept government backed student loans. If this means that only state colleges see federally backed loan money, then more expensive schools will discover the effects of supply and demand and eventually their tuition rates (which have skyrocketed past most of the rest of the economy, double medical costs even) will have to drop or they’ll have to stick to recruiting only rich kids and hope they get enough to cover the budget, while state schools grow.

– Student loan interest rates are set high enough to cover administrative costs, and no higher, if this means rates are a fraction of a percent, so be it.

– Part of the student loan plan application should list the degree being sought, and the average incomes for this degree, and the percent employed in these fields after graduation, and it should list a schedule of payments and average living expenses to see if the degree will support the loan.

– Students going into shortage fields deemed essential, such as maybe education, health or engineering would see a further tuition decrease, and lock the student into a major.

All and Sundry and Labels

I tend not to join things very often, mainly because not too many (if any) organizations have opinions that I can support across the board.

Part of the problem with group labels is that there’s a modern tendency to lump everyone associated (even remotely) with everything that anyone (even remotely) associated with a group says or does. Not all Christians/Muslims are trying to impose their religion on the rest of the world, not all feminists are man-haters, not all pro-choicers favor abortion, not all pro-lifers want to picket or blow up clinics, and the list goes on and gets really blatant when we start looking at political parties.

The implied (all) is something I think needs to go. “(All) [insert name of group here] are [insert label here]” or “(All) [insert name of group here] want to [insert action here]” are a couple of the templates of labeling, because not (All) of anything believes in everything, and quite frankly some that join groups are their own special little bag of issues all to themselves.

Hitler was a vegetarian, big deal not all vegetarians are Hitler.

Lumping people together under the birds-of-a-feather philosophy used to have a name, it was called prejudice. Prejudice used to be seen as something to oppose, now it seems that many feel that the only forms of prejudice to oppose are those that they don’t hold themselves.

Chat Snippet: “Sexy Boudoir Shoot”

Categories: Snippets, Tags: , , ,

I have a lot of random conversations through the interwebs, here’s a piece of one.

Her: “I had a woman that wanted a ‘sexy boudoir shoot’ but I had to tuen her down because she had a left sided masectomy and only has one breast and theres no way I could make her look sexy like that.”
Me: “There are times that I wish I lived near where some of you idiots are turning down gigs like this, you had a chance to do something amazing and screwed the pooch because you can’t wrap your head around the larger story here. She survived something traumatic and all you can visualize is scars. Lose my contact info.”

I’m all for people taking the clients that they want to, but seriously, why be a jerk about it? There’s a photographer for everyone out there, and if you find one that doesn’t fit, keep looking!

Chat Snippet: “Bewbs… yadda yadda and Yaha and so on”

I have a lot of random conversations through the interwebs, here’s a piece of one.

Her: “I look at the stuff Yayahan wears and its like she’s never even heard of femimism!”
Me: “First, Yaya Han, two names there, it makes it sound like you confused her with Benihana. Second, a goal of feminism is for women to be able to wear what they want without being judged for it. So, she’s doing her part and wearing what she wants, when do you do yours and drop the judgmental crap?”
Her: “Typical make response “show me teh bewbs!”
Me: “So now you’re judging me on stuff that you (not me) said? If she wants to wear it, let her, when I hear that she’s being forced to wear something that she doesn’t want to, I’ll be grumpy on her behalf. For now, I’ll just stick to being grumpy with those that rattle off sexist drivel and those that try and shame people for being themselves, in other words, you’re no better than the “show me teh bewbs!” crowd.”
Her: “Your just a typical male asshole!”
Me: “Nah, I give it style… must be the beard… or the cane.”

Friends list: -1

I get so many variations on this sort of argument that I can’t even make a macro for a standard canned reply. Well, I suppose I could. “Quit judging people you asshat!” But it sort of lacks something.

Gandalf

Reasons that Gandalf didn’t need to be some ultra powerful spell-slingin’ uber-wizard.

1. Tolkien wasn’t a munchkin, min-maxer, or power gamer, so he didn’t get his jollies writing overpowered characters.
2. The main power of wizards is knowledge and wisdom, they have some spell-type stuff, but they were send to advise and give good counsel, not to grab evil by the balls and squeeze it out of existence.
3. Plot trumps power. Tolkien wrote a story where problems were solved bycooperation, hard work, sweat, pain and loss, not some pointy-headed dweeb with a wand.
4. It was up to Middle-Earth to struggle for its freedom and safety to earn it, not have it handed to them.
5. Yes, with an uber-wizard and a couple of eagles the Lord of the Rings would be about a chapter long, and nobody would read it, and it wouldn’t have millions of copies and been constantly in print since it’s first run until today.

And why didn’t they just fly over and drop the ring into Mt Doom?

“…”The Eagles are a dangerous ‘machine’. I have used them sparingly, and that is the absolute limit of their credibility or usefulness. “
― Letter 210, J.R.R. Tolkien…”

Chat Snippet: Progo Shaming?

Categories: Snippets, Tags: , , ,

I have a lot of random conversations through the interwebs, here’s a piece of one.

Her: “Why would anyone want to take pics of ugly ass progo chicks?”
Me: “Clarify your statement.”
Her: “PRego is ugly why do they show it off?”
Me: “There is nothing ugly about being pregnant and they want the pictures are because they are proud and happy that they are having a baby, fortunately for your mother, she got to be proud until you said something this stupid. Don’t ruin her memories of when you were likable 😉
Her: “That’s just wrong dude.”
Me: Yup, so go apologize to your mom for saying she was ugly when she carried you around all of those months.”
